Financial & Accounting Consulting
Numbers you can actually make decisions from.
Most small business owners can tell you their bank balance. Far fewer can tell you their gross margin, the real cost of delivering their service, or whether last quarter was profitable. Accounting done properly answers those questions — in time for the answer to be useful.
Bookkeeping
Bookkeeping is the routine recording of everything that moves: sales, purchases, payments received, bills paid. It's unglamorous and it's the foundation everything else sits on. Without it, tax preparation becomes archaeology and business decisions become guesswork.
We handle monthly transaction recording and categorization, bank and credit card reconciliation so the books match reality, accounts receivable and payable tracking, and organizing source documents so they're actually findable when the CRA asks.
We work in cloud accounting software, which means you can see your numbers whenever you want rather than waiting for a monthly package to land.
Financial Statements
A set of financial statements is how your business explains itself — to you, to the CRA, to a bank considering a loan, and eventually to a buyer.
We prepare income statements showing revenue and expenses over a period, balance sheets showing what you own and owe at a point in time, and cash flow statements showing where money actually went (which is frequently a different story from the income statement).
For businesses that need them, we prepare year-end statements in the format your accountant or lender expects, including GIFI schedules for corporate tax filing.
Payroll
If you have employees — including yourself, if you're incorporated and paying salary — payroll comes with obligations that don't wait: source deductions remitted on schedule, records maintained, T4s issued by the end of February.
We set payroll up, get the remittance schedule right, work out the CPP, EI and income tax deductions, and are there when something goes wrong at year end — the ROE nobody has issued, the T4 that does not reconcile. The cycle itself runs in your own software; we make sure it runs correctly.
GST/HST and PST
If your revenue crosses the registration threshold, you're required to register, charge, collect, and remit sales tax. Many small businesses register voluntarily before that point in order to claim input tax credits on their expenses.
We handle registration, determine your filing frequency, calculate input tax credits, prepare and file returns, and — for BC businesses — deal with PST, which follows a different set of rules than GST and catches people out regularly.
Chart of Accounts & Systems Setup
If your books are set up badly, every report they produce is useless in the same way.
We design a chart of accounts that reflects how your business actually works, so that your reports answer the questions you care about — which service line is profitable, where costs are creeping, what your true overhead is. We set up the software, connect your bank feeds, establish a document workflow you'll realistically maintain, and train you on the parts you'll touch.
Financial Advice for Business Owners
Beyond compliance, we help you read your own numbers.
That means cash flow analysis and forecasting — understanding timing, not just totals, since profitable businesses fail from cash flow problems all the time. It means break-even analysis, pricing and margin review, budgeting and variance tracking, and the sole proprietor versus incorporation decision, which has real tax and liability consequences in both directions.
This area connects to
- Company Registration
- A corporation needs books from the first day: separate accounts, a chart of accounts that fits the business, GIFI schedules at year end.
- Tax Services
- A return is built from the books. Without them, tax preparation becomes archaeology.
- Business Consulting
- Margin, break-even, and cash flow are read out of the books. Advice without them is guesswork.
